Sixteen Candles (1984) (Arrow Video) (BLU-RAY REVIEW)
Director: John Hughes
Starring: Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, Justin Henry

For high schooler Samantha Baker (Molly Ringwald), her 16th birthday might be the worst day of her life. Her entire family has forgotten about it due to her older sister s impending wedding; her biggest crush, high school hunk Jake Ryan (Michael Schoeffling) has discovered an embarrassing sex quiz filled out by Sam in which she details how she is saving herself for him; and to make matters worse, she is hounded by a relentless nerd (Anthony Michael Hall) who won’t take no for an answer. But Sam s sweet sixteen isn’t over yet, and before the end of the night, all her birthday wishes could still come true.

John Hughes is a great director if you are into his type of movies. I just so happen to be someone who loves the types of movies he makes and as a result of that way of thinking I am under the understanding that John Hughes’ Sixteen Candles is one of the greatest teen movies that has ever been made. Despite coming from 1984 when I was only one year old, thanks to such things as cable TV and VHS I grew up watching this one over and over. The tale of a girl who’s life seems to halfway fall apart on her sixteenth birthday is one of the more funny movies I have ever seen. It is a movie that isn’t just limited in its story to teens as it has an overall feel that makes you like it regardless of age, but it also packs more than one plot going on inside of it as well that all comes to a head and all comes to a great resolution as all movies from around this time should. From our newly turned 16 Samatha (Molly Ringwald) to the geeky geek played by Anthony Michael Hall, to even foreign exchange student Long Duck Dong, this movie has a lot going on and all of it is funny and interesting.

A story like this never gets old as a release like this from Arrow Video shows us. It’s a movie that can touch you as well make you laugh, and if I had a list of best movies ever made it would sure be on it and it might just be the best teen movie we’ve ever seen. Not only is this version of Sixteen Candles here in a new 4K transfer, but in with the theatrical version we also have the extended version for the first time. If you pop the disc in a Blu-ray drive you will also find the script for this one as well as a whole host of other great extras that cover just about everything you can think of when it comes to this great movie. Is it a little silly? Yes. It is a little crude? Of course! But it’s still one of the best-made movies out there and it’s a movie I never get tired of watching.
