A young man is confined in a mental hospital. Through a flashback we see that he was traumatized as a child, when he and his family were circus performers: he saw his father cut off the arms of his mother, a religious fanatic and leader of the heretical church of Santa Sangre (“Holy Blood”), and then commit suicide. Back in the present, he escapes and rejoins his surviving and armless mother. Against his will, he “becomes her arms” and the two undertake a grisly campaign of murder and revenge.

Every once in a while a movie comes out that takes creativity in a new direction and sets a bar for films to come. I believe Santa Sangre was a film of that nature and sure it borrows a little from Psycho, but it is very deserving of all the hype it has gathered. Alejandro Jodorowsky is known for awesome and weird visuals in his films and that is well on display here more than once. We see beautiful and weird scenes, shots, and images on screen. We also are doused in the face more than once with things that question morals and graphic violence! That in a way makes it my type of movie because if I want gore and weird stuff on screen this movie has that and then some.

The movie is a lengthy movie but it is one of those movies where you won’t mind at all. We get a lot of backstory from when our lead was a kid and we see what made him the way he is when we rejoin him later in life. From that point the stage is set for us to know why he is the way he is and it’s all a tragic story. But above all else it is a story that makes you think and shows you some very awesome scenes along the way. I am happy to see this film get all the credit it gets now. I’m not sure how it was seen when it came out in 1989, but as of the present time now you can all believe all the good things you’ve read. The hype for this film is well deserved.
