Just One of the Guys (1985) (BLU-RAY REVIEW)
DIRECTED BY: Lisa Gottlieb
Starring: Joyce Hyser, Clayton Rohner, Billy Jayne

Terri (Joyce Hyser, TV’s “L.A. Law”) blames sexism when her journalism teacher refuses to enter her article in a competition to win a summer internship at the local newspaper. With the help of her kid brother, Buddy (Billy Jacoby), she masquerades as a guy at a rival school and enters the contest there. During her charade, “Terry the Boy” tangles with a vicious bully, Greg (William Zabka, The Karate Kid), and fends off an amorous classmate, Sandy (Sherilyn Fenn, TV’s “Twin Peaks”). But when she falls for a handsome loner, Rick (Clayton Rohner, TV’s “Murder One”), our hero/heroine must find a way to convince him that she’s not JUST ONE OF THE GUYS.

Oddly enough I am just now seeing Just One of the Guys. When news came out that this was getting a Blu-ray release I had a lot of friends over-joyed and hitting that pre-order button all the while I was feeling a little left out because there’s a lot of 80s’ comedies I love and know by heart and this one wasn’t one of them. Driven by the plot of a girl interested in journalism and her journey to infiltrate the school and the lives of a few people undercover as a dude, Just One of the Guys is good fun. I can’t really call it good “clean” fun because as I watched this I couldn’t believe what passed for PG-13 back in the day. For instance, one scene shows this girl goes into her brother’s room and it is filled wall to wall with nude women from dirty magazines all over the place! I don’t know if the old quality of the 80s’ helped it back in the day, but you can see the boobs here! You also have THAT scene in the movie which I won’t say anything else about because it’s pretty famous and it spoils some stuff, but THAT scene is here and it’s apparently all good PG-13 fun during this time!

But that doesn’t bother me any, in fact, I enjoy it. I am an adult and I love these types of movies and I feel the more adult stuff is just a bonus. The plot is the important thing and watching this one proves to be very interesting and fun with our lead starting to have feelings for her new friend that things she’s a dude. What’s a girl to do huh? Well, I dug this one and I can see why people who grew up watching it might love it. Joyce Hyser is a great leading lady. She’s good looking and the girl can act! Everything in Just one of the Guys is where it needs to be and what it needs to be to make it work. If you were like me and hadn’t seen this one, you might want to fix that as soon as you can.
