The Vampire Lovers (1970) (Collector’s Edition) (BLU-RAY REVIEW)
DIRECTED BY: Roy Ward Baker
STARRING: Ingrid Pitt, George Cole, Peter Cushing

A diabolical female vampire ravages the young girls and other townsfolk of a peaceful hamlet in eighteenth century Europe in revenge for the killing of her fellow vampires years earlier. A rousing hunt for the vampiress ensues as a group of men follow her bloody trail of terror through the countryside. Adapted from J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s novella Carmilla, this “rather erotic Hammer chiller” (Leonard Maltin) stars Ingrid Pitt (Countess Dracula), Madeline Smith (Frankenstein And The Monster From Hell) and Peter Cushing (Horror Of Dracula, The Curse Of Frankenstein).

This film from Hammer is one of those that starts out really strong with very eerie shots and scenes, somewhat slows down in the middle, but then comes back for a strong finish. Along the way, we have decapitations and a whole heck of a lot of nudity. I don’t know about you, but that spells a good time for me when I’m kicked back to watch a movie. The ingredients to this well-made film are vampires, pretty women, and some spot-on acting that really helps to bring the story along. Also, don’t forget to get the replacement disc on this one if you do want to see the ever so welcomed nudity in this one.

As I noted above, it is a film that at times packs a slower pace. This is a movie that does deliver, but you have to stick with it. I think it packs enough classic vampire lore and pretty women to hold most horror fans’ attention. Scream Factory gives this one a whole new coat of paint with a new 4K-based transfer and the difference from the original release is pretty well noticeable from the jump. You also get a nice list of new extras that more than justify a double-dip if you are a bit fan of this one already. Overall I’d say the setting as a whole helps drive home the creepy gothic feel of the movie and if you dig Hammer stuff you’ll surely do this.
